In 1974, while en route to their designated offshore reef site, the 3 Barges broke free from their transport. In an emergency operation, the US Navy Explosives Ordinance Disposal team boarded the runaway barges and detonated explosive charges sinking them in their present location before they could wash ashore. Today the barges lie among more recently deployed bridge rubble. The barges are in less than 50 feet of water making this site popular among newer divers and those who prefer a laid back shallow dive teeming with marine life.
